Just two miles away, in the original heart of Mount Pleasant is the Old Village. This National Register district abounds with beautiful homes from the colonial and antebellum periods. The Old Village offers a beautiful public park, an expanded area for crabbing and fishing and a panoramic view of the harbor. Just off the Old Village is the lively section of Shem Creek. Visitors to the Isle of Palms also enjoy the historic charm of neighboring Sullivan's Island. Located on Sullivan's Island, visitors find Fort Moultrie, originally built during the Revolutionary War. Edgar Allen Poe wrote his famous story "The Gold Bug" while stationed here. Sullivan's Island is also the burial site for Seminole Indian Chief Osceola. Other historic sites on Sullivan's Island include the Sullivan's Island lighthouse, Fort Moultrie, and numerous shore batteries that provided defense until the end of World War II.
